VPS students bowled, dribbled, leapt, swam, grappled and danced their way into 2015 winter state sports championships. Congratulations to the following student athletes!

Basketball

The Skyview High School girls’ basketball team, coached by Jennifer Buscher, finished eighth in the Class 4A state tournament. Varsity team members include Hannahjoy Adams, Ashlee Comastro, Riley Friauf, Sydney Friauf, Kirsten Johnson, Mimi Kalani, Tiana Klutz, Genevieve Lo, Maddie Lord and Hanna Van Nortwick.

Bowling

Lauryn Heying, a senior at Fort Vancouver High School, took second place in the individual Class 2A/3A girls’ state bowling tournament. Her coach is Julie Pagel.

Reagan Lorey and Michayla Garden, Hudson’s Bay High School, placed third and seventh, respectively, in Class 2A/3A competition. Their coach is Pam Laughlin.

The Columbia River High School girls’ bowling team struck gold, clinching their first bowling state championship in the Class 2A/3A tournament. The team is coached by Dana Blair and Logan Burnett. Team members are Anali Gomez, ninth in individual competition; Emily Basnett, 10th in individual competition; Veronica Munson; Abby Rugg; Shantel Black; Jacquelyn Gunderson; and Celine Bennett.

Dance/drill

In the 4A dance/drill state championships, Skyview finished second in show, earning a rating of exceptional. In hip-hop, they also earned a rating of good. Team members are Jaade Archer, Lauren Borghello, Brianna Brown, Tavion Bush, Flora Espinoza, Sophia Galaviz, Maddy Graves, Mariah Guyton, Parker Hendricks, Kailee Hibbs, Audra Jensen, Alexis Keith, Rachel Koch, Beth Merkl, Jonathon Oancea, Alisha Ram, Shelby Sherman, Marquette Slater, Terissa Tucker and Savannah Williams. Their coaches are Ryan Valencia, Bailey Cook and Sami Brower.

Gymnastics

In the Class 1A/2A/3A competition, Sarah Ellis, Columbia River, tied for sixth on beam, seventh on bars and 10th on floor.

Columbia River finished fifth as a team. Members included Ellis, Jossi Bellinger, Julie Fergus, Morgan Fitzer, Natalie Garcia, Hannah Hawn, Sierra Hayden, Keelie Mahoney, Kenzie Moxley, Emily Roberts and Jorden Wohlsein. Alicia Green and Allison Sparrow are their coaches.

In Class 4A competition, Miranda Lea of Skyview placed third in beam and finished fourth in all-around. Lea also tied for fifth in floor, eighth on vault and 10th in bars. Her coach is Sarah Long.

Swimming

In Class 3A competition, Columbia River’s Josh Bottelberghe finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke and ninth in the 200-yard freestyle. His coach is Alyssa Manlow.

Skyview swimmer Jake Breuer finished fourth in the Class 4A 200-yard IM. Jennie Zarosinski is his coach.

Wrestling

Caitlin Horrocks of Skyview placed third in the 120 weight class at the girls’ state wrestling tournament. Her teammate, Natasha Williams, placed fifth in the 130 weight class. Their coach is Chad Ortiz.

In the boys’ Class 2A wrestling tournament, Darion Green, Hudson’s Bay, placed eighth in the 132 weight class. His coaches are Albert Alcantar and Kory Kanekoa.
