Patrick Mongrain, a teacher at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, received a $2,500 Thank America’s Teachers grant, sponsored by Farmers Insurance. Mongrain is one of 60 teachers selected from among approximately 2,000 applicants.

The funds will support the ongoing implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports at Jefferson. PBIS, part of an effort to foster a positive school culture, already has resulted in decreased suspensions and expulsions. Students learn positive behaviors in bimonthly school-wide lessons, and those behaviors are reinforced in cost-neutral ways. Teachers also are trained in positive discipline strategies. The grant will expand opportunities to provide training and incentives to students who demonstrate respect and responsibility.
