Students from Vancouver Public Schools recently joined some of Washington’s finest high school musicians at the State Solo and Ensemble Contest.

Small and large ensembles faced off in seven categories: woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings, women’s vocal, men’s vocal and mixed vocal. The contest included 29 solo categories: seven woodwind, five brass, four percussion, four strings, six vocal, piano, guitar and harp.

Congratulations to the following participants, who were selected for their outstanding regional performances:

Skyview High School

  • Douglas Graham, cello
  • Spencer Reid-Rice, tenor
  • Genna Smith, trombone

Their teachers are Sarah O’Mara, Philip Denton and Timothy Heichelheim.

Columbia River High School

  • Josh Wann, tuba

His teacher is Dave Keckes-Chartrey.

Vancouver School of Arts and Academics

  • Eva Stoumbos, bass
  • Brayton Sobolewski, tenor sax (qualified but did not compete)

Their teachers are Luke Brockman and Ann Medellin.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association/Washington Music Educators Association State Solo and Ensemble Contest was held April 29-30 in Ellensburg, Washington.
