This year’s Pacific Northwest regional screening of the International Youth Silent Film Festival will include the work of some of VPS’ video production students. The IYSFF challenge asked the filmmakers, all under the age of 20, to select a musical theme created for the festival and use it to create a story no longer than three minutes in runtime.
The following films by VPS students rose above more than 100 other submissions to earn entrance to the festival:
- “The Bear” (horror) by Patrick Mox, Thomas Jefferson Middle School (teacher Bill Graves)
- “Detention” (western) by Brendan Nash, Jonathan Lane and Seth Yoshinobu, Skyview High School (teacher Nancy Wistrand)
- “The Wand” (sci-fi) by Logan Williams, Vancouver School of Arts and Academics (teacher Andy Berhow)
“The Bear” will screen on Monday, May 22, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hollywood Theatre in Portland. “Detention” and “The Wand” also will screen at the Hollywood Theatre on Wednesday, May 24, at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. both nights.
The top three finalists in the Pacific Northwest festival will be announced at the May 24 screening. They will be sent on to the international competition that will be screened in Portland on June 7.
