Three VPS students received grand prizes in the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District’s 2015 Summer Reading Bookmark Contest. Congratulations to Elijah Maxwell Thomas, Chinook Elementary; Cristal Hernandez-Patiño, Thomas Jefferson Middle School; and Joymae Capps, Fort Vancouver High School. Their work, as well as designs by two other students from different school districts, will be among the 20,000 bookmarks printed and distributed for FVRL’s popular Summer Reading program that runs June 1 to Aug. 31.

More than 2,250 entries were submitted using the theme “Every Hero Has a Story” (kindergarten through fifth grades) or “Unmask!” (sixth through 12th grades). Finalists for each grade grouping were chosen at individual libraries. One district-wide, grand-prize winner was selected from among the local finalists for each grade grouping.

Thomas was the second- through third-grade winner, representing Three Creeks Community Library. Representing The Mall Library Connection were Hernandez-Patiño, the sixth through eighth-grade winner, and Capps, the ninth through 12th-grade winner.

The bookmark contest has been one of the district’s most popular programs since it began as a biannual event in 1985. Contest judges include library staff from across the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District.
