David Finnie, Dave Finnie, Culinary Arts, Fort Vancouver High SchoolFort Vancouver High School Culinary Arts teacher

Years with VPS: 17

Most memorable career experience: While VPS was building the Jim Parsley Education, Family and Community Center, I had the opportunity to work with George Propstra. Since George had successfully built the Burgerville franchise, I thought he would teach me more about restaurant operations. But I learned more about teaching others than opening a restaurant. George told me that life is about family and friends, and without them you can be as successful as you want, but you will still be alone. Mr. Propstra built his businesses around the community he lived in. Working with the teachers, students and friends in culinary arts is my success.

One thing I’ve learned: Don’t ever judge a book by its cover.

Three words that describe me: Persistent, passionate, caring.

When I’m not working, I: Kayak, garden, golf and spend time with my family and friends.

David helped mentor Skylar Stover, an alum of the Fort Vancouver High School Culinary Arts program who recently cooked his way to second place in the Bocuse d’Or international culinary competition.
