Several Vancouver students claimed state championships or placed in the top 10 in spring 2018 competitions. Congratulations to all the student-athletes, their coaches and families!

Track and field

Fort Vancouver High School track athletes and coaches

Fort Vancouver High School sophomore Lincoln Glick won the state boys’ discus throw in the ambulatory competition and placed third in the shot put ambulatory competition. Fellow sophomore Mark Koryagin won the state boys’ shot put wheelchair competition, setting a new meet record of 21-06. He also brought home gold in the boys’ javelin throw, wheelchair division. Emily Phelps, also from Fort Vancouver, placed fourth in the 3A 3,200-meter run and sixth in the 3A 1,600-meter run. Coaches are Dennis Carline and Arlisa Hinton.

From Columbia River High School, Giovanna Rhoads placed seventh in the 2A high jump competition. Teammate Lucy Ianello finished fourth in the 2A 1,600-meter run. Michelle Bus is their coach.

Angel Terry of Hudson’s Bay High School placed 10th in the 3A shot put competition. Tom Petersen is the varsity coach.

Skyview High School’s Ethan Gould finished fifth in the 4A high jump. Teammate Krystal Kaufman placed sixth in the girls’ 800-meter run. The boys’ 4×100-meter relay team of Casey Murray, Jack Thomas, Gavin Baskette and Jalynnee McGee finished seventh. Julian Williams and John Yajko are the head track coaches.

Soccer

Columbia River High School boys' soccer team

Columbia River High School boys’ soccer team won its first state championship at the 2018 2A tournament to cap a perfect season with 23 wins and 15 shutouts. The varsity team includes David Gonzalez-Martinez, Reilly Burke, Conner Brower, Maksim Yurichko, Alex Wiser, Julian Villa-Salas, Jack Kolosvary, Jackson Kleier, Trey Johnson, Apostolis Kosaris, Alexander Ashmore, Alex Eiken, Jake Connop, Candler Bolte, Roger Pinacho, Jacob Warthen, Bailey Sarvela, Marcos Diaz, Marc Miranda, Ryan Connop, Sid Kosaris, Daniel Kruzhkov, Cade Lujan, Greer Snellman, Evan Underland, Gabriel Guzman and Christian Martinez. Filomon Afenegus is the head coach. Matt Newman, Luiz Castro and Ryan Callahan are assistant coaches.

Tennis

Skyview High School boys' tennis team

Skyview High School senior Andrew Kabacy won his second consecutive 4A men’s state singles championships, and the Skyview men’s tennis team repeated its team state championship. Players include Kabacy; Christopher Sheppert and Joey Gaylor, who placed sixth in the doubles competition; Tyler Church; Jonathan Hutley; Sean Wilcox; Jaxon Mills; Brandon Mukensnabl; Alex Teipel; Sam Sugarman; and Adam Pozsgai. Coaching staff includes Jay Gowen, Scott Binkley, Jackie Gibbs and Shelley Pitzer.

In the 2A girls’ tennis singles championships, Columbia River High School’s Faith Grisham placed third. Kevin Erickson is her coach.

Baseball

Skyview High School boys' baseball team

Skyview High School boys’ baseball team was the 2018 4A state runner-up and recipient of the 4A State Academic Achievement Award for their collective 3.71 GPA. The team includes Daniel Copeland, Michael Lundgren, Carter Hill, Max Rose, Griffin Sissel, Hunter Renne, Brent Monahan, Carson Mowrer, Chris Swan, Michael Hickey, Nick Oien, Pete Ramsay, Liam Kerr, Alex Miller, Ryan Pitts, Noah Guyette, Lowell Dunmire, Cooper Barnum, Micah Baylous and Titus Oien. Seth Johnson is the head coach. The coaching staff also includes Eric Miller, Brian Hansen, Stu Bussey and Jason Jacques.

Golf

Columbia River High School placed eighth in the 2A girls’ tournament. The team, coached by Dave Bennett, includes Madeline Kim, Naomi Phelps, Karlyn Gomez, Abby Kinney, Miya Baltazar and Taylor Blakley.

River’s boys’ golf team placed fourth in their 2A tournament. Coached by David Long and Bob Nelson, the team includes Kyle Gomez, Mason Waite, Isaiah Lamont and Brady Yackley.
