Transitional Kindergarten allows kids to begin kindergarten early. Students will complete a half year of kindergarten this year and then complete a full year of kindergarten during the following school year.

Transitional Kindergarten is a time for children to explore and begin to find their place within a new environment as they start their transition to school. They develop critical social and academic skills that launch them toward success.

Transitional Kindergarten is a free kindergarten experience designed for children who will be at least 5 years old by Aug. 31, 2022. Eligible children will not have attended preschool or another early learning environment and would benefit from additional help transitioning to school.

At Sacajawea, class will begin on November 1, 2021, and end on the last day of school (June 15). The child will begin traditional kindergarten with the start of the 2022–2023 school year.

At Ogden, class will begin on January 31, 2022, and end on the last day of school (June 15). The child will begin traditional kindergarten with the start of the 2022–2023 school year.

The program will be located at Sacajawea Elementary School and Ogden Elementary School. All families who live in the district are welcome to apply, even if they do not live within the boundaries of the schools where Transitional Kindergarten is located.

Transportation is provided for students living within the boundaries of Sacajawea Elementary and Ogden Elementary. Parents of students outside of school boundaries who are selected for this program will be required to provide their own transportation to and from school.

A certificated teacher and a paraeducator will teach the class.

The total class size at each school is limited to 18 students. Those residing within the school boundaries of the Transitional Kindergarten programs have first priority. Students living outside of the school boundary but within the Vancouver Public Schools’ boundaries are selected next based upon the outcome of the screening process.

The program will follow the elementary (kindergarten) schedule at the time.

Students and staff will follow all health and safety protocols, including face coverings, health screenings and temperature checks.

Students will complete a full year of kindergarten during the 2022-23 school year and start first grade in fall 2023.

  1. To apply, complete the online form by Oct. 1, 2021, at 4 p.m.
  2. After completing the form, you will receive a link to an informational meeting via Zoom:
    • Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2021, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
    • Monday, Oct. 4, 2021, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
    • Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  3. Be contacted by Oct. 12, 2021, for a screening appointment.
  4. Attend a screening appointment between Oct. 18 and 19. Appointments usually last about 15 minutes.
  5. Get notified of placement no later than Oct. 22.
  6. Attend a parent orientation the week of Oct. 25. Date and time to be announced.
  7. Child begins Transitional Kindergarten on Monday, Nov. 1, 2021.

      • Thursday, Dec. 2, 2021, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

    3. Be contacted by Jan. 3, 2022, for a screening appointment.
    4. Attend a screening appointment between Jan. 10 and Jan. 12. Appointments usually last about 15 minutes.
    5. Get notified of placement no later than Jan. 19.
    6. Attend a parent orientation the week of Jan. 24. Date and time to be announced.
    7. Child begins Transitional Kindergarten on Monday, January 31, 2022.

A member of the early learning team will contact parents to make an appointment for a 10- to 15-minute screening that will look at the child’s:

  • Developing literacy and math skills
  • Motor skills
  • Visual and hearing skills
  • Social-emotional development
  • Language development

A decision will be emailed within 10 days of the screening date.
