Congratulations to Skyview High School! The school has been designated a Special Olympics Unified Champion School® receiving national banner recognition. Only a handful of schools nationally received this honor during 2021-22 school year, and Skyview is the only Clark County school to earn this designation.
To achieve status as a Special Olympics Unified Champion School®, schools must demonstrate a commitment to inclusion by meeting 10 national standards of excellence developed by a national panel of leaders from Special Olympics and the education community.
Not only does the award acknowledge inclusive sports programs, but it also recognizes a whole school approach to inclusion focused on awareness, advocacy, leadership, and education in all student programs and activities.
Principal Andy Meyer shares, “I am proud of our students and faculty for embracing our equity and inclusion work and for ensuring they are applied to all school activities. I am very grateful that the commitment and hard work of the Skyview community have been recognized by Special Olympics and I hope the Unified Champion School designation will inspire future generations of students to continue this legacy of excellence.”
The school celebrates the national banner recognition in an assembly on Dec. 13, which is being coordinated with Special Olympics of Washington. That program features guest speakers, a short unified basketball game, and a reveal and hanging of the banner.
“We were happy to invite local media to help us celebrate this achievement. See their coverage below:”
