Student-athletes placed in the top 10 in cross-country, swimming and diving and soccer at their respective state competitions.
Cross-country
Skyview High School cruised to a fourth-place team finish in the 4A girls’ state cross-country meet on Nov. 4 in Pasco, Washington. The team’s average time was 19:56. Runners included Ellen Burbank, 11th place with a time of 18:33; Krystal Kaufman, 13th with a time of 18:35; Lexie Rutherford, 24th with a time of 19:03; Presley Timmons, 52nd with a time of 19:43; Isabella Abbruzzese, 55th with a time of 19:46; Emily Hogan, 98th with a time of 21:12; and Abigail Haug, 112th with a time of 22:42. Bob Brands is their coach.
Swimming and diving
Columbia River High School’s swimmers placed 12th overall in the team competition at the 2A girls’ state swimming and diving meet Nov. 10-11 in Federal Way, Washington. Alyssa Manlow is their coach. Individually, senior Kara Noftsker nabbed third place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.24. Teammate Makena Wilcox, also a senior, placed seventh in the 50-yard freestyle finals with a time of 25.76. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of junior Elizabeth Lujano, Wilcox, senior Sarah Ellis and Noftsker finished sixth in the finals. Their time was 1:45.24.
Soccer
Under the guidance of Head Coach Filomon Afenegus, Columbia River was the runner-up in the 2A girls’ state soccer championships Nov. 18 in Shoreline, Washington. Leading up to the title game, River defeated Clarkston 2-1, Bellingham 1-0 and White River 1-0 before falling to Liberty 3-0 in a hard-fought title game. The varsity team includes Annie Benson, Liz Canton, Julia Cash, Mara Cassidy, Kyla Castro, Katie Colson, Shalece Easley, Merritt Fielding, Sydney Flores, Sarah Givvines, Ava Greer, Reggie Griffith, Lucy Ianello, Sophie Landers, Hannah Larson, Katie Lee, Callie Loper, Joy Miller, Yaneisy Rodriguez, Alex Schulz, Sophia Skimas and Jissel Valencia.
