VPS students in grades 6-12 can participate in a variety of full-day and half-day Programs of Choice and Choice Schools that help them explore their interests and gain the knowledge and skills needed for their future careers. Current students may apply for any of the programs that serve the grade they will be in the following year. Enrollment will begin with the 2024-25 school year.
Enrollment in these programs and schools is free, but students must apply for admission. Applications should be submitted online between Wednesday, Jan. 3, and Feb. 23.
A blind lottery system for student acceptance will be open to all students in the district and transportation will be provided.
Related to this lottery, the Vancouver Public Schools board approved an equity-based selection policy for choice schools and programs of choice during their Feb. 14, 2023 meeting. The rationale for the policy change states: “The district’s magnet program policy and procedure are revised to reflect the board’s goal of providing enrichment and equity in choice schools and programs for all students.”
Based on this, the selection process for all programs of choice, secondary and elementary, will allot a designated number of openings based on the student’s neighborhood school’s population size and factors of that school community. This selection process is an effort to ensure that enrollment within programs of choice mirrors that of the district.
Students who live within district boundaries will be given priority over students from other districts. Transportation is provided only for in-district students.
Students who are not accepted to a program may be placed on a waiting list.
